Our students have so much to offer and teach us.
“Good morning, Mr. Aligada!” Dee shouted as he skipped towards me across the Meyer Elementary School courtyard.聽I responded back, “Good to see you Dee!”聽As we did our secret handshake, I encouraged him to have an awesome day and watched him make his way to his classroom. This quick moment between Dee and I is quite memorable to me because our relationship has not always been this harmonious.
At the start of the year, everyday felt like a battle.聽Going into my聽partner teacher classroom, I often thought to myself, ‘what聽would be today:聽inappropriate language, fighting, or the usual disrespect聽from Dee?’聽From early on,聽Dee was identified as the class聽clown.聽He聽sought every opportunity聽to crack jokes and聽make his classmates, and often himself, laugh.聽His combination of wit, energy, and boldness often led him to make poor behavior choices聽and聽ultimately, earning a frequent聽letter home to his parents.聽Incident after incident, I began to feel more defeated with my progress in building a trusting relationship聽with Dee.
While to his peers聽Dee was the聽class-clown,聽I saw him as聽an聽intelligent聽student with great potential.聽Based on his聽benchmark scores, he was the聽second most advanced reader in his class.聽One day,聽I had the idea to share聽a college level book聽with Dee that I had been聽reading. He showed interest right away and聽proceeded to read聽a page out loud with impressive fluency.聽I also noticed that, in addition to his exceptional reading skills, he聽was quite proud of his ‘drawing skills’ as he called it. He was quick to flaunt his creative聽projects聽and聽clearly聽articulate聽the reasoning behind his artistic choices.
After spending more time together, I realized that Dee’s聽joking聽behavior聽was聽his聽yearning聽to聽genuinely be聽seen and heard聽by others. Moreover, my original mentorship strategy of, ‘I’m the adult, therefore you must respect me,’ was unrealistic.聽As I showed more interest in his ideas and listened intently, Dee shared more about himself.聽It was in this time that I finally began to hear his jokes and appreciate his witty humor.聽In return, I felt that he too began to acknowledge and hear me as well.
When we enter our service year, we are motivated to change the lives of children for the better. We hope to teach them to be more equipped students and respectful classmates.聽Though noble and big-hearted,聽I believe聽our service year is much deeper聽than student success metrics.聽In the same way I am serving聽with聽City聽Year to teach students, our students聽have聽so much to offer and teach us. Perhaps, we聽simply聽need to be open enough to聽genuinely聽listen聽and聽share a laugh with them.
