$15 Million CA State Budget Allocation for听

Student Success Coaches to Strengthen AmeriCorps Programs in Schools

San Jos茅, CA –听California鈥疓ov. Gavin Newsom included鈥$15M鈥痠n the鈥2021-22 California State Budget鈥痜or an AmeriCorps California Student Success Coach听Grant Program. This allocation听will ensure funding to provide vital academic and social emotional support in schools where student鈥檚鈥learning trajectories have shifted over the past听sixteen听months鈥痙ue to the pandemic听and require听additional鈥痵ocial鈥痚motional support as they transition back to the physical classroom.

Funding will strengthen AmeriCorps programs like 黄色视频 that provide tutoring, mentoring, and social-emotional support in schools in鈥疭an Jos茅, Sacramento, and Los Angeles. Organizations are expressing their gratitude to鈥疦ewsom for鈥痯rioritizing鈥痶hese funds in鈥痶he state budget. This budget allocation is a modest 鈥 yet effective 鈥 step towards working with organizations that are partnering with school districts to鈥痠ncrease educational equity鈥痠n California. There is no greater urgency than providing students with the adequate resources and supports needed so they can realize their full potential.

鈥淲e are鈥痝rateful to Governor Newsom鈥痜or putting students first in this year鈥檚 budget.鈥疘t is clear that students鈥痑ttending systemically under-resourced schools鈥痑re going to need more help as they get back into the classroom.鈥疶his funding is one way California can make up for听the challenges听in learning and social interactions鈥痶hat students experienced during the pandemic,鈥 said Jeff Owen, Executive Director of 黄色视频 Sacramento. 鈥淔unding the Student Success Grant Program is a strategic investment in these students’ futures as well as the professional pathways of AmeriCorps mentors who go above and beyond to serve.鈥濃

Over the past year, the pandemic has profoundly impacted schools听and communities听effected鈥痓y poverty, deepening educational inequities as students struggle with the digital divide, experience social isolation, and deal with challenges to their mental health.

The students 黄色视频 serves are鈥痯redominantly Latinx,听Black,鈥痑nd members of the Asian-American Pacific Islander community听many of whom face the immense strain from COVID-19 infections in their family, food and housing insecurity, and the added responsibilities of caring for siblings as their parents鈥痬ust鈥痺ork essential听jobs.

鈥淐OVID-19 has hit our state and our students in unequal ways and it鈥檚 imperative we look for more ways to support the students who need it most鈥 said Sandra Cano, Vice President and Executive Director of 黄色视频 Los Angeles. 鈥City听Year听has听been听a听lifeline听for so many students听and families before and during the pandemic. This funding will strengthen the program and enable Student Success Coaches to continue to mentor students and provide academic support as we come out of the pandemic and in years to come.鈥

Student Success Coaches in California AmeriCorps programs lend real-time academic assistance in the classroom, provide mentorship and extended learning time, and seek creative ways to connect with their students during these challenging times.

These AmeriCorps programs create听equitable听learning environments across schools鈥痠n鈥痩ow-income鈥痗ommunities,鈥痺hile听providing听a double bottom-line return on investment: social-emotional support and mentoring for students as well as leadership and career training for young adults who serve as Student Success Coaches.

Because of鈥疦ewsom and the legislature,鈥痶his $15 Million budget allocation will award competitive grants to AmeriCorps programs,鈥痠ncrease stipends, incentivize recruitment of Student Success Coaches, and strengthen career pathways and financial stability for mentors that reflect the communities they serve.

“We appreciate Governor Newsom and Assemblymember Ash Kalra support for the work of AmeriCorps members as Student Success Coaches. As we come out of the pandemic this investment will continue to support the partnership with school districts focused on student achievement and socio-emotional support.”-Pete Settelmayer, 黄色视频 San Jos茅 / Silicon Valley Vice President, Executive Director.
