Staying Motivated During the Virtual Workday

黄色视频 Philly staff and AmeriCorps members Egypt Worthy (top left), Grant Draughn (top right), Kylie Brazil (bottom left), and Sarah Richman (bottom right) share their tips for surviving the virtual workday.

Since the COVID-19听lockdownsbegan in March, many of us have had to take our livelihoods听partly or even entirely virtual:virtual conferences, virtual听classroomsand听virtual meetings,听all from the comfort of our own homes. In many ways,听it makes things听easier 鈥听no more waking up early, no more commuting, no more work clothes (see听ya,听khakis, hello sweatpants!).听

But after almost a full year of virtual work environments, and many Philadelphiarestrictions听still听in place,听working from home can go from feeling comfortable to cooped-up and confining.听Sometimes we need to break up the monotony of sitting at our computers for hours and give ourselves a little mental (and physical!) health boost. Here are some of the听tips and tricks听that听黄色视频 staff and AmeriCorps members听(ACMs)have been using to听add some variety to their dayto stay motivated听while听promoting education equityand serving Philly schools听virtually.

Tip #1: Establish a Routine

To start, we talked to 黄色视频 Impact Managers Egypt Worthy and Sarah Richman听about how they manage their听workday.听Something that was a big help to both was sticking to normal routines.

鈥淲hen I actually get up and do my full morning routine it鈥檚 much better than听the temptation of getting up at 7:55 when听[work starts]at 8,鈥 Richman said. 鈥淪o,听trying to get up a little earlier, have my tea, get washed up, have breakfast so I鈥檓 actually ready for the day.鈥听Worthy听agreed, again noting the importance of maintaining a schedule. 鈥淚 wake up every day at the same time, I try to end my day by听5. I told my team, 鈥榣isten, that鈥檚 my cut-off… 5 o鈥檆lock is when I鈥檓 done,鈥欌听she听explained.

Tip #2: Take a Break

According to Worthy, another trick for taking a break from the screens is听just putting her laptop down and doing something听else.听Going for a walk outside, or even just sitting on the couch and listening to music听can help put yourself in a different mindset. Richman听also believed that maintaining boundaries between work and breaks听was important, and that going for walks or working out immediately after the听workday听could help maintain that balance.听

Both Richman and Worthy also found that just calling and talking to friends and co-workers was a great way听to听take a break from听working virtually.听鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 so isolating,鈥 Richman explained. 鈥淚 just need someone to have a quick laugh with, or vent or whatever.鈥 Reaching out to people for fun outside of meetings听can help provide social interaction听in听a time when communicating with friends or co-workers in a non-work environment听can be difficult.

For Richman, being in tune with your emotions and needs听isalso veryimportant to maintaining your听sanity while working virtually. Unless she has a prior engagement, like a meeting, if she starts to feel like she鈥檚 losing focus, she takes a short break. 鈥淚 know I鈥檓 not going to get work done if I鈥檓 not focused,鈥澨Richman said. 鈥淚鈥檇 rather take a little break听and then try again rather than force听myself.鈥听Worthy agreed that knowing when to take breaks is important, for her especially when she has a lot of meetings back-to-back. 鈥淪ometimes I just need to cut everything off…听I听just听need a moment听to sit on the couch and fall out, just lay there for a couple minutes,鈥 she explained, laughing.听

Tip #3:听Adding听Variety to听the Virtual Workday

Next, we had a chance to talk with some of our AmeriCorps members about some of their strategies for听spicing up听their day听while working virtually.听One听ACM听who works with the Civic Engagement听Team,Grant Draughn,听has found that听having regular check-ins with his team as well as team-building activities has helped as a temporary听stand-in听for the听鈥small talk and chit-chat” typically enjoyed in the office environment.听

Outside of work-related strategies, Draughn听keeps himself grounded by meditating every day and by making to-do lists to keep himself on track.听鈥淚 also take a short break each hour for 5-10 minutes,鈥 he added. 鈥淚 get up and walk around and stretch for a bit... occasionally on those breaks I鈥檒l play with my cat or pet the little guy.鈥Draughn will also stream TV shows or movies when he鈥檚 off听work and听makes sure to go outside for at least a little bit every day to get some sunlight.听

Kylie Brazil, another ACMon the Civic Engagement Team, also tries to get outside and away from the computer when she can, particularly during lunch.听Staring at a screen all day can be overwhelming,听so she likes going for walks with her dog to a park near her home. 鈥淚t鈥檚 nice because there鈥檚 usually people there, so you actually get to see physical people,鈥 Brazil said.听

Brazil also tries to make work more fun during her team鈥檚 morning meetings.听Her team will pick one person each day to lead an activity, anything from icebreaker games to putting together Spotify playlists. When it鈥檚 her turn to lead, Brazil likes to lead morning stretch sessions, using YouTube videos as a guide to help people wake up in the mornings with a little bit of physical activity.听

Another way Brazil tries to break up the monotony of her听workday听is by engaging with students in after school programs听at听John听Welsh听Elementary.听The students usually log on for about an hour after school ends, to participate in听a number of听clubs offered at Welsh,听such as a step-dancing,arts and听crafts,or just hang out and play games. 鈥淚t鈥檚 like team building with the kids, bonding with the students,鈥 Brazil explained. 鈥淭hey seem to really enjoy it, so I think it makes the team really want to show up and have fun in those spaces.鈥

Working in virtual spaces can be hard, especially for those who are used to engaging with people in person as part of their听job.听Even with听Philadelphia听beginning to loosenpandemic听restrictions, it seems virtual work and service will be听a thing for at least a while longer. With any luck, these strategies听will help people听bring some variety听and motivation听into their virtual workday.
