Alumni Spotlight — Amber Cox

Amber Cox first听learned about听黄色视频 when she was pursuing a bachelor鈥檚 degree in business management听at The College of New Jersey.听It was d别蝉肠谤颈产别诲听to her听as a 鈥渄omestic Peace Corps鈥 by fellow College of New Jersey student Dave Weinstein, who would also go on to work for 黄色视频, and the idea stuck with her.听Between her junior and senior years, she decided to get her first taste of the organization by working as a marketing intern. She fell in love with 黄色视频, and after a little nudging听by her manager during her senior year, she decided to听do an AmeriCorps service year after graduation.

From 2009 to 2011,听Amber served听with听黄色视频 Philadelphia(CYP)听as a team leader听at Thurgood Marshall School, working directly with听Philadelphia听students to support their education,听before applying for a staff position at CYP.During her time here she worked as an impact manager, instructional coach听at James G. Blaine Elementary School, and lastly as director of learning and instruction.听

After 10 years听of working for CYP, Amber left the organization in 2019听to teach fourth-grade literacy and social studiesat听Blaine Elementary, in addition to pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in Pre-K through fourth-grade education and a听teaching听certificate at St. Joseph鈥檚 University.听

黄色视频 Philadelphia听recently听had the opportunity to have an in-depth conversation with Amber about her experiencesas aCYP听corps member听andstaff member听and as a Philly schoolteacher!

What did you enjoy听most about your time as a Corps member?

I had a unique experience because I started as a team leader, which we don鈥檛 even do 鈥 鈥渨e,鈥 I refer to 黄色视频 as 鈥渨e鈥 a lot still 鈥 but 黄色视频 doesn鈥檛 really do that anymore, at least not in Philly. So,听I had a听unique experience in that I started as a team leader. I guess there are two things. One听was always getting to work with students and see them learn and growand getting these personal connections with students.

Even though it wasn鈥檛 my direct role, I kind of insisted that if I was going to be hired as a team leader that I would still get to work with students.听The second would be seeing the growth of the team and what the team听as a whole was听able to do.听I think听this听is another unique part of being a team leader;听you see,听holistically,听the actual impact that鈥檚 being听made.听

Did your time听coaching听at Blaine Elementary influence your decision to听become a teacher there and start working on your master鈥檚 degree?

I would say听more so听my听corps member years and getting to work directly with students.听At the time I don鈥檛 think I recognized this, but that鈥檚 where I got my energy and where I was probably the happiest in my work and what I was able to do.听That鈥檚 why I left 黄色视频 because there鈥檚 no way they were going to make me a team leader again, so my only option was to go back and do something different where I could directly work with students.听I think that was kind of what drove me back, because, for me personally, working with students is the thing I鈥檓 most passionate about. I would say my role in coaching maybe solidified my belief that teachers are听so critical, they are the most important factor in students鈥 success, and I firmly believe that our students deserve听great听educators who are willing to stay with them.听

Let’s discussthe听COVID-19pandemic and the challenges it poses to your work. Do you feel like you鈥檙e able to have a bigger impact because of the skills you听acquired听at 黄色视频听despitethechallenges we鈥檙e facing now?

It鈥檚 hard for me to know what my experience would be like without my 黄色视频 experience, but I鈥檓听fairly confident that it would not be as strong. Do I think that I might be able to make that big of an impact on my students this year? No. But I think that鈥檚 because this type of learning seems developmentally out of order for them. I teach 9- and 10-year-olds, and for virtual learning, we鈥檙e basically asking them to manage their own time. That鈥檚 a lot. That鈥檚 a lot for an adult, let alone a 9-year-old.听Students听have to听do the thinking and听have to听do work in order to听learn, and听getting them to do听those听things is extremely challenging. Those are things that could be managed by a teacher in the听classroom but听is very difficult to manage in the virtual setting.

What I do think is that听my time at 黄色视频 taught me that you can always get better and you can always improve and that nothing is ever a lost cause.听It helped me see how that works in education, so there鈥檚 not ever going to be a day when I don鈥檛 try.听So,听黄色视频 has helped me to know that if you keep trying, you might hit on it. And sometimes you don鈥檛, but you just don鈥檛 give up.

What advice would you give to current听AmeriCorps members and people who might be considering joining听黄色视频?

I think my advice听right now goes back to what I already said,to not give up.听Particularly in the virtual setting we鈥檙e in.Students听want a connection, they want structure, they want someone to be looking out for them, so don鈥檛 give up. Keep trying听because the students need you,听and听ultimately, I think small-group is going to be the only chance for success for students in a virtual space, which is what 黄色视频 does. So,听keep trying, keep doing the small groups, because I think that will have an impact on whether you see it or not.

And then advice to people coming in:plan ahead. Just be ready, because I think if you do City听Year AmeriCorps, you鈥檙e right, go all in.听It鈥檚 only a year or two years, and it is giving a year of your life to something else and听serving, so know that you鈥檙e supposed to be giving something up to do this.听I think that鈥檚 the value in 黄色视频, you get these people who are super committed to their students, and they do it for听one听year.

Amber is just one听of thousands who have dedicated听their careers to helping our students.听If you would like to听commit a year of听service听to support youth in education, learn more听about applying to 黄色视频 Philadelphia on听our听website.
