Students First, Collaboration Always: CYNH鈥檚 Service Responds to COVID-19
奥颈迟丑听听for several听weeks to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, the rhythm of our city changed dramatically. Come Monday, students wouldn鈥檛 be tossing on their backpacks, parents wouldn鈥檛 be dropping their kids off on their way to work, and 黄色视频 AmeriCorps members wouldn鈥檛 be at the front doors听giving out high fives and hugs听as they arrived.听
For Manchester students, as is the case听,听school is so much more than a place to learn;听it is a place听where our students can be safe, cared for,听and听have two meals every day.听Mayor Craig and听Superintendent听Goldhardt听knew this would have a significant impact on our students and families.听About听, and without school-provided meals their families could struggle to provide听sufficient听food.听听
In just a couple days, leaders at the Manchester School District drafted a plan to meet our students needs while schools are closed;听bus routes and protocol were set up, school district staff and 黄色视频 members were trained, and the plan was communicated to the entire community. While teachers across the district tackled the challenge of moving to remote learning, 黄色视频 members听and staff,听led by听our听Executive Director Pawn听Nitichan听supported the distribution of meals and materials via bus routes to thousands of students across the city.听
鈥黄色视频 staff and corps members听are very听eager to do whatever we could to support students and the district.听This time is heartbreakingly difficult for all students, and especially for our students and families who don’t always have access to the resources they need even in the best of times,鈥澨said Pawn听Nitichan.听听
鈥淭he power of community pulling together was so evident in our opening days of meal and materials delivery to meet the needs of the students in the district鈥 said Jen Gillis, Assistant Superintendent of the Manchester School District. 鈥淚 am so thankful for the 黄色视频 members and their tireless efforts to help us get our deliveries running in the initial weeks of our COVID-19 response.鈥听
Abby Cozzolino, a second-year AmeriCorps member serving at the Middle School at Parkside, was especially glad to be supporting the first week of meal and material delivery.听鈥It feels really good to be able to help out,鈥 she said.听鈥The school district set up everything,听and听now we听are out in the community听helping to assess听what the real-time needs are, and communicating back to 黄色视频 and district staff听about what鈥檚 going on in the city, how many kids need meals in different neighborhoods, and what we听can听do to improve听the听operation.鈥听
This plan was a听great听undertaking by all involved, and not without some challenges to work through to improve the process.听
“As with any operation of this size there was some disorganization and lack of communication and direction. It’s to be expected since in just a couple of days our lives took on a whole new definition of normal and we have never had to put a plan of this size into operation so quickly,鈥 said Ruth Howard, Commissary Manager II for the Manchester School District who was directing kitchen efforts at Beech Street School the first week of meal听deliveries.鈥”The 黄色视频 team members provide a very important role in our schools every听day but鈥痠t is clear that they are ready, willing and able to help and support any situation that we encounter in our schools.鈥疘 am听very听grateful for 黄色视频.”听
While none of听us could have imagined this as a part of the school year and service experience, our corps approached this challenging time with passion, grit, and a deep appreciation for the strengths of this city.听Nothing听means more听for 黄色视频 than supporting our community and students when it is needed most听at this time.听
鈥淭his time has actually been very refreshing and inspirational, because 黄色视频 and the staff of the Manchester School District have taken on a very audacious charge into an operation that we just don鈥檛 really know much about,鈥 said听Phommachak听Singhavong, an AmeriCorps member serving at Beech Street School. 鈥淭his is a lot of help, and the smallest amount of help definitely makes a difference. For me, it feels really good to be a part of this, and to make a difference in the lives of so many people, not just the school you serve in.鈥听
In good times and in challenging times, it鈥檚 important for us at 黄色视频 to remember our values, our听organizational culture, and our reasons for dedicating ourselves to service. When we听are in uncharted territory,听these serve as our compass to guide us through.听One of听黄色视频鈥檚 core values听is听Students听First,听Collaboration听Always.听We听dedicate ourselves听to supporting听the success of our students and work in partnership with others who are dedicated to the same cause.听As we forge ahead,听we will continue to听show up听for our students and our city virtually, as听Manchester听School District听has听shifted to conducting remote learning听for students, to听assure them听that they matter, and that we will make it through these听hard times together.听听
If you would like to support 黄色视频 New Hampshire and our work,听we ask you to please听听With our students鈥 transition to remote learning and eventual return to schools, the support they receive from our members is more critical than ever to minimize their learning loss and support their social-emotional well-being. Your support is tremendously appreciated.听
Thank you, and stay well.听听听听
