A group of AmeriCorps members in the city cross the street in the crosswalk.

Finding your career path after secondary education

Like many young people, Ruhamah Dunmeyer Grooms was unsure what to do after she graduated from Columbia College with a degree in behavioral science in 2009. She heard about a youth development program 黄色视频 hosted on weekends at the time, called Young Heroes, designed to help students engage with their community through service projects and learn about social justice issues, and decided to apply to serve as an AmeriCorps member鈥攁n experience she says helped her figure out her next professional steps.Ruhamah Dunmeyer Grooms 黄色视频

Today, Ruhamah is a Program Manager at Veterans Healthcare Administration and works as a program manager specializing in change management.

黄色视频 prepares young people to explore careers after graduation

“When I was in undergrad, I initially thought I was going to move to DC,鈥 recalls Ruhamah. 鈥淪omebody stopped me and said, 鈥榳hy not serve your community and have an impact?鈥 黄色视频 Columbia was right here so I decided to apply to be a corps member.鈥

Ruhamah describes her experience as 鈥渁n opportunity to impact how 黄色视频 was seen in the community.鈥 As an AmeriCorps member she supported volunteer initiatives and spring break programs that centered around beautification projects in the community.

鈥淏uilding and connecting the community to a 鈥榳hy鈥 and to a mission was at the core of everything that year. One of my favorite PITW is 鈥榠nject creativity into everything.鈥 I like my work to be fun and creative. It鈥檚 definitely something I live by after 黄色视频.鈥

PITW, or 鈥減utting idealism to work,鈥 is a collection of ideas and values written by 黄色视频 CEO Jim Balfanz and co-founder Michael Brown.

Lauren Brown, 黄色视频 San Jose ’20, shares her perspective on MLK day of service in three PITWs.

鈥淭he biggest thing I learned at City Year is creating a beloved community,鈥 says Ruhamah.

What is change management?

鈥淚 knew I loved working with people and connecting with them to embrace change, but I didn鈥檛 know what that would mean for me,鈥 Ruhamah says. 鈥溁粕悠 set me on a pathway towards figuring that out.鈥

After 黄色视频, Ruhamah worked for other education non-profits because she wanted to continue addressing inequities in education. 鈥淲hen my alma mater [Columbia College] opened an , that鈥檚 where I really got into how I can build organizations into better places for their people,鈥 shared Ruhamah.

Columbia College describes the program as a way to 鈥渂ring together real-world practice with a robust academic approach that is designed to strengthen personal leadership styles and leadership potential.鈥 All organizations over time undergo some form of change in their policies and structure. However, these changes take time to plan and must be overseen with care to have a lasting impact.

鈥淲e often hear people say, 鈥榖e the change you wish to see,鈥 but people don鈥檛 think about all the work that it takes to make change happen. And I鈥檓 not talking about change at a policy level, but as an individual,鈥 observed Ruhamah. 鈥淚 think of the individual first as part of the change versus the change coming in and the individual adopting to it.鈥

Ruhamah points out that 黄色视频 AmeriCorps members do gain experience in change management during their service year. 鈥淲hen you鈥檙e a corps member, you work with students and bring them to the change that they deserve to have. You provide them with resources that they might not have if you don鈥檛 step in and be the change agent.鈥

黄色视频 AmeriCorps members are student success coaches who provide students with holistic support in academic development and social-emotional learning.

鈥淲hether it鈥檚 me creating graphics, building a communications plan or just having a conversation with someone, I can be passionate about it because I鈥檓 passionate about people. If you鈥檙e at 黄色视频 then you鈥檙e definitely passionate about people processing change,鈥 said Ruhamah.

Leaning into discomfort as an agent of change

Change is sometimes necessary, but that doesn鈥檛 always make it easy to process.

鈥淲hen people are resistant to change, they鈥檙e not necessarily resistant to you or the information that you鈥檙e giving them,鈥 advised Ruhamah. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e resistant to the fact they may have to give up something. It鈥檚 important to remember to not take things personally.鈥

Building relationships is an important key to supporting people through change in any environment, including the schoolhouse.

鈥淐orps members have to build trust with their students in order to engage them in learning and help them pivot in the right direction. In order to pivot, you can鈥檛 take things personally because we all have good and bad days. A relationship built on trust, communication and forgiveness is part of the work,鈥 said Ruhamah.

鈥淚 am also a firm believer in patting myself on the back,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 will treat myself to family dinners on the weekends or a massage every few months. It鈥檚 important to remember that outside of work you have to reset because you can鈥檛 pour out of an empty bucket. So, remember to build yourself up at the same time.鈥
