Collaborating to innovate education practices

Collaborating with partner schools and districts to design student learning experiences鈥攂ased on research and our experience serving in classrooms鈥攊s an important part of 黄色视频鈥檚 work to advance student success and educational equity.

In recent years, we聽have聽intentionally brought聽educators聽together in聽learning communities聽and聽are聽facilitating conversations聽with the broader education and philanthropic sectors, sharing聽what we are learning聽about what students need to thrive and how to support and supplement school improvement efforts across the country.

Examples of our innovation聽and school design聽work include:

  • . 黄色视频 and Johns Hopkins University聽have collaborated to develop a competency-based learning聽model that integrates social-emotional聽and academic聽development with a design partner school聽that聽embraces bilingual curriculum.聽Compass Academy is a charter public school serving middle school students in southwest Denver.
  • Teacher聽residency program.聽As聽a substantial portion of 黄色视频 AmeriCorps members聽聽go into the education sector聽after their year or two of service,聽黄色视频聽has聽designed, launched and聽is聽implementing a teacher residency program聽that focuses on whole-child development in partnership with major teacher training programs across the country.
  • Publications聽for educators. Recognizing the role 黄色视频 plays at the intersection of聽research聽and practice, 黄色视频 has developed a series of practitioner guides and resources for school-based staff聽on supporting students during COVID-19; adapting聽teaching and learning to a virtual environment; and integrating social-emotional skill building with academic interventions.
  • Learning networks.聽Through leveraging聽our聽district partnerships,聽we have been聽convening聽administrators and聽educators聽to聽learn from one another and聽support school improvement efforts, keeping equity at the center.

Networks for school improvement

The Network for School Improvement聽work聽at 黄色视频 focuses聽on聽learning networks for聽the middle grades聽and what it takes to support聽students and聽educators through the implementation of continuous improvement practices.

黄色视频 leaders were聽selected聽to present at the Carnegie Foundation Summit on Improvement in Education, held virtually this year聽in late April. The summit provided an聽opportunity to share what we are learning from two聽of聽the Bill聽&聽Melinda聽Gates Foundation-funded projects that are designed to bring educators together and offer them tools and support as they strive to create engaging聽and equitable learning environments for their students:聽聽and a related聽鈥淎ction Community鈥澛爄nitiative.

Paola聽Deliz聽Felix Encarnacion, National Network for School Improvement Leader,聽and Hollis McAllister,聽Senior Director of Network for School Improvement聽in聽Tulsa,聽shared their work聽using聽continuous improvement to center equity at the heart of鈥痭etworked improvement鈥痚fforts聽through聽a聽model that is being used by 黄色视频 partner schools in聽Milwaukee聽and Tulsa.

Preparing for back-to-school this fall

A second session at the Summit highlighted an “Action Community” launched by 黄色视频 during the pandemic to support schools as they grapple with the challenges of engagement, recovery and return to school.

Learn more about resources 黄色视频 has rolled out for educators during Covid-19.

As a complement to 黄色视频’s expanding network for school improvement initiative, the Action Community focuses聽on the importance of engagement and belonging as schools move to bring students back to the classroom and pivot from virtual and hybrid models.聽The community is聽focused on preparing for聽school openings this fall after disruptions caused by the pandemic, including creating 鈥渃hange packages.鈥 These聽free online resource for educators聽offer聽resources聽that support them in addressing common needs across districts.

Led by Virgil Shepherd, Senior National School Partnerships Director, and Matthew聽Wernsdorfer, Managing Director of Regional Impact, the聽Action Community聽session聽also highlighted the experience of Marcia Fulton, Executive Director of Compass Academy, an implementation partner.
