Why Serving from Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic Hasn鈥檛 Dampened My Idealism
Being a teenager is hard under any circumstances, but I鈥檓 inspired by my ninth-graders鈥听resilience in the virtual听world.
Brimming with optimism back in July, I diligently听checked off the items that I鈥檇 need听for my 黄色视频 uniform听during听a听typical year听of service. I felt听like a kid shopping for school supplies again.听I knew I鈥檇 be starting my service year virtually,听but I was eager to start听repping听my program, so I听sought out the听flyest,听black,听non-denim non-yoga pants听and mostly black听closed-toed shoes. And听then they sat in my closet for听ten听months听while I听continued听joining听Zoom meetings from my bedroom听on the East Side.听听
Four seasons, two administrations and one attempted听coup; spiking COVID-19 cases in my own听family and thousands more; excruciating debates about听the return to in-person learning in the听Milwaukee Public Schools system: I rocked my bomber-and-sweatpants听chic throughout it all.听听
But an elastic waistband and the three-foot commute听from my bed to my desk can鈥檛 ease the听heartbreak that I feel for my听ninth graders听every听day. While serving in bilingual English and听Geometry classes as a member of the Chavez Cardinals听Team at South Division High School,听I鈥檝e watched the same students鈥 names cycle in and听out of virtual classrooms over and over as听their internet connections waver, and silently begged听them to find the energy to come back just听one more time. Some students unmute themselves to听ask questions over the sound of screaming听baby siblings, while others haven鈥檛 spoken up since听January. Many don鈥檛 have cellphones and听have resorted to using teachers鈥 office hours links听to hang out with their friends.听听
I can tell they鈥檙e lonely, bored and frustrated鈥攁s听if being a teenager isn鈥檛 already lonely, boring听and frustrating enough. I believe decades will pass听before we fully understand the toll that the听COVID-19 pandemic听has had听on the hearts and minds听of high school students in Milwaukee听and elsewhere.听听
What dazzling hearts and minds, though! I鈥檓 present听from the shoulders up every day to provide听all the support I鈥檓 capable of, but for a more selfish听reason as well: I get to be in awe of my听students鈥 grit and, somehow, their continued joy for learning; and of my teammates鈥 and听partner听teachers鈥 compassion and patience.听听
My emotional lifeboat听is the student鈥檚 mom who decorated a听room in their house to look like a classroom; another听student who suddenly submitted a听months-long backlog of geometry homework after we听called home to check in; and another one听who recently asked me for an extra list of poems听to听read during our poetry unit (the same student听once encouraged my Spanish skills so kindly that I听had to turn off my camera so no one would听see me tearing up).听
I鈥檝e decided to dedicate a second year of my life听to service as a Team Leader with 黄色视频听Milwaukee for these students, but also for the ones we听never see, who I鈥檓 terrified will fall through听the many yawning cracks in听the inequitable education听system. I know that听every single one of them听is capable听of听keeping听me听an optimist, if I can only give听them the opportunity. Also, maybe I鈥檒l听finally be听able to break in those oxfords.听
Do you know an 18-25 year old interested in doing a year of service with 黄色视频 Milwaukee? Encourage them to听.

When asked why she serves, Clare said, 鈥淚 serve for the students at my hometown high school, including myself, who struggled because we didn’t always have an academic mentor who understood us as a whole individual while we were students. I鈥檓 inspired by 黄色视频鈥檚 commitment to the value of 鈥榮ervice to a cause greater than self,鈥 because I have always found my sense of identity in the communities I belong to. 黄色视频 Milwaukee and Corps 11 are two of those communities.鈥听
