A global pandemic motivates Team Leader Dia Vang to fight for change
In August, 黄色视频 Milwaukee volunteered with聽聽to fill over 75 backpacks with school supplies and聽hygiene products.
On March聽13, Governor聽Evers mandated a statewide school closure. Hearing this聽news聽broke me.聽The school closure聽meant the possibility of never seeing our students again and not being able to close relationships with them. It also聽meant the聽cancellation聽of events my team and I planned聽and聽were looking聽forward to plan聽for our students. Since August,聽I looked forward to watching the聽eighth-grade students, who I served last year,聽strut across the stage in their best attire. But, due to Covid-19, graduation has been聽cancelled.
Serving during a global pandemic
Working from home has been an adjustment. I enjoy the various聽virtual聽sessions and聽independent activities AmeriCorps members聽can participate in to聽earn service hours. However, I聽would聽rather be with my team聽making a聽positive聽impact on students and聽James Madison Academic Campus.
Every day, I wonder, “How聽are students聽doing? How do students聽access internet and聽laptops? And what happens聽if they do not have access to either? If students can do聽schoolwork at home, are they getting the support they need?聽What does the聽2020-2021 school year look like?聽How will students聽acquire the skills聽they missed during the last couple months of school?”
Some students do not have internet or computer聽access, and some struggle with聽reading; therefore, they聽are not able to do the work. With parents聽and聽guardians聽at work, students may not have an adult at home to help them聽with their work.
Now that students have less support than they did while in school,聽it pushes me to continue to fight for equitable educational rights for our students and to聽continue to advocate for their needs,聽so that they can be successful scholars.
Not only will I continue to fight for our students but also my community. The pandemic has brought significant inequalities to the forefront, including the fact that聽African Americans are聽dying at聽disproportional聽rates due to health聽disparities;聽there聽has been increased聽racism towards Asians;聽and there are聽inadequate shelters for those experiencing homelessness and聽lack of access to clean water. With the crisis at hand and injustices still prevailing,聽it goes to show that now聽more than ever change needs聽to happen and more support is聽essential聽for those in need.
During this time, I have been reflecting on how聽I can聽use my privileges and skills to聽continue聽serving聽my community.聽I have also been researching groups and organizations to be involved with in making social change. I am not exactly sure on what my role looks like in being a part of social change, but some of the things I am聽passionate聽about are closing the school-to-prison pipeline, ending the cycle of domestic聽and sexual聽violence and having more conversations about race and gender inequality.
During this time,聽聽and other community members who opened a pop-up food pantry for those in need聽inspires me聽to continue serving. Sometimes creating change can be discouraging, but I am encouraged and motivated by Fred聽Kaems聽鈥溾澛爉ural.聽It brings me great joy to be part of a community that truly cares for others.聽Through all this, I am聽FIRED UP to continue making a difference in the lives of others.
