Closure to my service year in the form of popcorn chicken

Emily Wasek served on the at Jean Ribault Middle School in Jacksonville, Florida. She now works just down the street from our office, as a Nonprofit Fellow at the ! Read how she came to realize that she is an integral part of a collective movement to improve our students’ futures.

I have always craved closure. I鈥檝e never been particularly gifted at saying graceful goodbyes to people who I鈥檝e grown to love, nor have I ever found a perfect way to express my thoughts to such loved ones. In May 2018, I had exactly a month before my year of service would close鈥攃oncluding one of the most challenging yet rewarding years of my life. As I pondered how to appropriately say goodbye to the more than 90 students who I鈥檇 laughed with, struggled with, grown with throughout the school year, no easy solutions arrived.

Despite all of the ways students had made gains in academic growth and proficiency, all of the ways students had grown their emotional intelligence, and all of the ways that students had improved their attendance throughout the year, there was still more to be done. There were students who were only beginning to grow in their academic progress, students who still required guidance when navigating the complicated emotions that come with growing up, and students who still struggled to make it to class on a regular basis.

I had joined 黄色视频 to make a difference, but wondered if I really had made a difference when there was still so much left to do? For the next month of service, this question followed me in every interaction that I had with my students. Every time a student gave me an early morning hug or high five during Power Greetings. Every time a student asked me a question in class. Every time a student excitedly told me about all of the plans that they already had in store for conquering the next school year. Had I really made a difference when there was still so much left to do?

Clarity came, strangely enough, later that month during a visit to a 笔辞辫别测别鈥檚. Several 黄色视频 Teams on Jacksonville鈥檚 Northside were planning to help host an after-school fair for students in the area. With a brief lag between event setup and the event鈥檚 start, our Team Leaders had given us permission to grab a quick bite in the area. Always a fan of some popcorn chicken, other AmeriCorps Members and I decided to make a quick trip to the nearby 笔辞辫别测别鈥檚 while still in uniform. And when we arrived inside, we were greeted by two welcoming sensations. First, the smell of fried food, and, second, a jubilant cry of someone shouting, 鈥淗ey! It鈥檚 黄色视频!鈥

We looked around, and quickly found the source of the excitement鈥攁 young man who was grinning from ear-to-ear from behind the cash register. Taking in our confused expressions, he laughed and explained, 鈥淚 love y鈥檃ll! Without 黄色视频, I wouldn鈥檛 have graduated from high school.鈥 As we ordered our food, he went on to share how as a child he鈥檇 always struggled in school, but during his final years of middle school everything had changed. From that time into his final days of high school, various AmeriCorps Members from 黄色视频 had worked with him, believed in him, and given him the confidence to graduate high school on time. Now, he was working at 笔辞辫别测别鈥檚 to save money for a higher education, and seeing our red jackets had brought back fond memories of all of the AmeriCorps Members who had helped him discover his passion for learning.

My teammates and I congratulated him on his successes, saying 鈥淭hank you,鈥 as he rang us up. 鈥淣o, thank you,鈥 he replied, winking at us as he punched in his employee discount. As we started to protest, he simply responded. 鈥淚鈥檓 paying you back for all of the times that 黄色视频鈥檚 helped me, and I鈥檓 paying it forward for all the kids I know you鈥檙e going to help in the future.鈥 And just like that, I realized that I鈥檇 been approaching my final month of 黄色视频 from the wrong perspective. As an AmeriCorps Member, my purpose was not to be the sole source of change in improving my students鈥 lives, but to be the one of many AmeriCorps Members in my students鈥 long academic careers who would provide a foundation of support for them to succeed. 黄色视频鈥檚 mission to serve my students would not conclude when I said my farewells, and my mission to create positive change within the community would not conclude when I completed my service year. Just like the laborers in 黄色视频鈥檚 founding story of Cathedral Building, I was one of many building a future for others that was greater than just myself.

On June 1, 2018, I graduated from 黄色视频 Jacksonville鈥攐fficially crossing the threshold between my service year as an AmeriCorps Member and the undisclosed years of service that I would continue to have as a member of the community. Surrounded by a sea of my colleagues dressed in red jackets, I was no longer afraid to say goodbye. Although I would miss 黄色视频, I was excited to say hello to a new opportunity to create a positive change鈥攋ust as I knew that although my students would miss me, they would be excited to welcome new AmeriCorps Members and new opportunities to grow in their academic journeys.
