The impact of affinity groups

Does聽the term “affinity group” mean anything聽to you? In case it doesn鈥檛, affinity groups are gathering opportunities for people who may share a common interest or identity.聽Over the past few years, 黄色视频 has聽grown their culture to be more inclusive and intentional while聽continuing their work to impact聽the communities where we聽serve. 黄色视频 established聽national affinity groups in聽2020聽as a place for聽AmeriCorps members聽and staff聽to talk about topics that may affect different individuals with similar backgrounds.聽Currently, 黄色视频 has developed聽a total of聽seven affinity groups: the LGBTQIA+聽Affinity Space; National Black/African American聽Affinity Group; National APIDA (also known as Asian, Pacific-Islander, Desi American),聽Native/Indigenous聽Affinity Group;聽National Anti-Racist White Learning聽Series (ARWLS); and the Mi聽Gente Affinity Group, formerly known as the Latinx Affinity Group. Although聽site-led聽affinity groups聽were established before聽the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen聽them聽become more successful once we moved to working聽virtually. They鈥檝e become successful due to the聽opportunities聽of share-outs and support from others in communities across the nation.聽Just when you may think you鈥檙e facing challenges on your own, someone is there to聽push and encourage you to聽remain positive聽through it all.

Affinity groups give AmeriCorps聽members,聽and even staff,聽a safe place to process what聽is聽going on聽around the world.聽During our service year, sites don鈥檛 have a chance to interact with one another, unless they have a service project聽collaboration. By enabling聽people to attend these groups, it聽also allows for staff and聽AmeriCorps members聽from different sites to meet one another and share their experiences. Even though聽groups are held virtually, they’re a way to bring聽people together in these unprecedented times.

I am involved with and聽feel the most connected with the LGBTQIA+ affinity space聽and聽 Black/African American affinity group,聽and the聽culture in both groups聽has聽exceeded my expectations tremendously. I came into those spaces not really knowing聽what to expect, but聽I was willing to keep聽an open mind. Being inside these spaces allows me to not only get to know others but to also share my experiences. Not聽every聽session聽is the same; some sessions聽are designed to feel safe, others聽are a place to be聽vulnerable, while other聽sessions are聽full of fun.

I鈥檓 not only an African American male but also a transman of color. The world isn鈥檛 always kind to people who identify in the LGBTQIA+ bracket. While attending the LGBTQIA+ affinity group, I find myself聽speaking up a little more聽each聽meeting. Even though most of us have different backgrounds, we鈥檙e all connected in some way. We’ve come together as a group to realize聽the influence聽that occurs聽between generations. Breakout groups have played a major role in聽moving towards聽inclusion.聽There鈥檚 a variety of topics discussed聽that many of us can relate to. I recently attended the聽Black/African American affinity group talent show, and it was very聽powerful! So many聽AmeriCorps members from different sites shared their work, such聽as聽spoken word, artwork and a few singers performed as well. Each session I鈥檝e attended, I have聽left feeling overwhelmed with joy due to how inclusive and welcoming those spaces came聽to be.聽One of the聽most meaningful聽topics we聽have spoken聽on in our breakout groups was about聽dealing with聽intersectionality聽during different times聽in our lives. Everyone聽was able to聽share their individual situations and ways they聽overcame adversity.

I never would鈥檝e expected to be a part of an organization聽with so many聽powerful core values,聽and they are manifested聽through sites across the country. Being a part of 黄色视频’s culture has allowed me to become more vulnerable and聽open up聽more about my experience in life as an African American聽male. At times,聽it’s聽tough to listen to the news or the radio due to negativity; joining聽these聽affinity groups gives me a lot of hope for communities around the world.
