Creating a virtual escape room

First page in Jessica’s creative Escape Room Challenge.

In the beginning of February,聽Team Care Force聽collaborated on聽a service聽event with the聽黄色视频 HQ Development Team. We showcased four kinds of virtual聽service聽projects聽for potential corporate partners聽to share with their companies聽in order for us聽all to聽continue to serve聽during聽the pandemic.

To prepare for this event, Care Force members were separated into teams to聽present different聽service options that we have done聽during聽past virtual events.聽I was聽part of a team with a completely new聽service聽project聽for Care Force:聽virtual聽escape rooms. Virtual聽escape聽rooms are online activities that聽children and adults聽use to solve puzzles, break聽codes and unlock rooms. The virtual escape聽room聽idea intrigued me because聽it would聽be a completely new聽service concept聽for Care Force. The idea was that volunteers聽would work together to come up with聽sets of聽challenges that could be woven together with a story to create聽the completed virtual escape聽room. By聽adding聽the escape room project聽to our virtual service repertoire, Care Force聽can engage volunteers across the globe in聽a zero-touch, completely virtual event.

To get started,聽Care Force sent a poll to聽our partner school, John Welsh Elementary School in Philadelphia.聽The fourth聽and fifth grade聽students聽directly voted for the聽escape room聽themes that interested聽them聽most. Some of the most popular themes were art, music,聽animals聽and the online game Among Us.聽Next,聽I needed to familiarize myself with escape rooms.聽I used a few resources to find聽different聽escape rooms聽and I played聽through them. Initially, I felt overwhelmed.聽The creators聽put so much thought and effort into their stories,聽and the challenges of their rooms聽seemed to聽flow seamlessly聽together. Through my research, I learned that half the fun of an escape room is playing聽all the way聽through the story, so to聽get in the mindset of聽presenting the materials to volunteers, I needed to make an escape room myself.

I used online websites and resources to聽create a foundation of understanding to build upon.聽We聽decided聽to utilize Google聽Forms to create our聽escape rooms because the platform was easy to edit and聽it would be聽simple to send the school, so I started my practice there. Once getting in the right headspace, it was fun to聽add challenges to the聽escape room that fit with the theme I chose.聽I decided to theme my聽room around one of the most famous art museums, The Louvre, in Paris. While creating challenges, I had fun learning more about The Louvre and some of the art that makes the museum so special.聽I dedicated聽more than an hour and a half to researching, brainstorming聽and creating my escape room that first day, and it was聽nowhere聽near complete. I learned that聽escape rooms need a lot of fine聽tuning in order function properly. It was fun to聽create, but I had to make sure that聽it聽was聽user-friendly and had all the necessary steps to guide聽players through the story.聽This meant that many text edits were needed聽for聽the story聽to make聽sense, and various聽extra sections were added in case players picked聽wrong answers and needed聽a prompt to聽get to聽the right answer.聽I scrolled and scrolled through Google Images in order to find the perfect pictures聽to fit聽my theme.聽Fine tuning takes time and patience in order to prepare for players, but I had fun working out the kinks and creating something that other people would enjoy.

A question in Jessica’s Louvre escape room challenge.

For the event itself, my escape room partner Eric and I聽used The Louvre escape聽room I created as an聽example to help volunteers familiarize themselves with the layout, challenges, questions聽and format of escape rooms.聽I realized聽that it was necessary for Eric and聽I to have first-hand experience creating an聽escape room so that we could properly聽answer questions聽from聽volunteers聽and provide them an example. The volunteers were able to聽use the interests provided by students at John Welsh Elementary School to聽start working on聽a great escape room idea about zoo animals.

In the end, I was happy with my final product. I was proud to share what I made with the聽escape聽room team, Team Care聽Force聽and聽our聽event partners. I marveled how much creativity and thought I put into each challenge.聽I was interested in what I聽made,聽and I am glad to be donating it to a 黄色视频 partner school in Philadelphia where students will get to use our virtual escape rooms聽during their聽afterschool聽programs to learn more about topics they are interested in. I encourage everyone to聽test their online skills聽by making聽an escape room for themselves and to聽share it with others.
