AT&T Believes at Home聽–聽Virtual Event #2 (2020)- An Alternative Way of Doing Service聽
For our second Team Care Force virtual event, we partnered with AT&T, getting a little creative聽in how we develop virtual service. Last spring, AT&T donated聽money to Care Force聽in order to hold five different physical service聽events聽in cities聽around the country.聽Unfortunately,聽those聽in-person聽events were聽canceled due to COVID-19. Instead, Care Force staff聽and聽AT&T聽collaborated聽to create a聽new聽vision moving forward.
Planning a virtual service event
In 2018, AT&T launched its program 鈥淎T&T Believes.鈥 This program is committed to service through a localized effort to create positive change in communities. The program works to harness employee engagement and joins with local collaborators to drive impact forward. Through this initiative, AT&T engaged employees in their 19 Believe communities in 鈥渁t home鈥 service with local service partners.聽As part of this program, AT&T holds an annual equity conference in October and invited Care Force to join as a service option for their volunteers.聽Due to the pandemic聽and the new model of service, AT&T expected聽participation聽to be lower than in past聽years. As it turned out, AT&T saw a higher number of participants in聽virtual service,聽than ever before.聽One of the reasons our events were so successful was because of the design of our 鈥渟hip and create鈥 model. AT&T employees were able to participate in the service without聽worrying聽about procuring materials or finding a service partner that would accept and use the finished projects.
For this partnership with AT&T, our Care Force聽Team聽started packing聽1,000 boxes聽at our headquarters in Boston to be shipped to聽volunteers, starting in聽mid-September. Each box contained six聽pencil聽pouches to decorate and聽pack with聽face masks, a pencil sharpener, pencils, pens, an eraser, sticky notes聽and聽age-appropriate聽writing utensils. Starting September 25, we received new volunteer names each week during their rolling registration process.聽As the names rolled in, we shipped聽boxes to volunteers聽and continued to聽do so for the next few weeks.
Preparing volunteers for virtual service
For the volunteer service component,聽volunteers would use Sharpie markers that were included to decorate the pouches聽before packing the pouches to send back. The new tracking聽label,聽a pre-paid stamp and return address聽were all聽included in the box, so once the service聽was聽complete, volunteers could just聽secure those three stickers and聽send聽it back聽in the mail.聽We started to聽receive boxes back at the 黄色视频 headquarters office in Boston as soon as one week after the first聽group of packages聽was sent out. As soon as we received those boxes, we began聽unboxing,聽processing and聽repackaging them to be sent聽out to our聽first service partner beginning聽on October 28.
To instruct volunteers how to complete the聽service,聽a聽video was created by Sam Sadlier, Care Force聽senior project manager, and聽shared with聽volunteers. The video showed聽how to unpack the box, decorate the pencil pouches, repack the pencil pouches and mail the box back to Care Force. If the video was not聽sufficient, the volunteers also had written instructions聽included聽in the box and were able to attend an optional聽webinar led by Chris聽Farzner, deputy director of Care Force. He went step by step through聽the process and answered聽volunteer聽questions. After the first group of participants joined the webinar聽on October 7, the project really gained momentum. It turned out that the volunteers in the first group sent the video instructions they received to other聽employees聽they knew in the company,聽causing聽more and more interest to serve in a virtual setting. At the end of registration聽on October 23, 744聽employees had signed up to receive boxes.聽Chris then held two more webinars on聽November 5聽and December 10聽so that every volunteer, even those who signed up after the first registration ended, would be able to attend.
Creating impact that supports schools
After deciding on the project and how it would be聽set up, there was one final major question. Who will be receiving the school supplies?聽AT&T聽indicated聽they wanted to have an impact聽on聽their Believe communities.聽This led聽Care Force聽to suggest reaching聽out to schools聽that AT&T聽and聽Care Force have partnered with for service events in the past. So,聽Care Force聽staff reached out to the 16 school partners from AT&T events dating back to聽2016. Out of those聽16聽partners, 10聽of them were聽very excited to be receiving聽the pouches.
Overall, Care Force was able to engage 1,000聽volunteers聽who created 6,000 pencil pouches, which聽were聽sent to 10 different schools across the country. Although it feels like we are living in the unknown, our hearts are warmed seeing that employees all over the country are so flexible and more ready than ever to volunteer their time to a great cause by helping students in need.
