The 黄色视频 Obama Team goes virtual
Thursday, March 12, 2020, was a different kind of day for the聽黄色视频 team serving at Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education. We had鈥痑n event planned聽to celebrate the upcoming鈥疨i Day, typically celebrated on March 14.鈥疢any鈥痶hings鈥痺ent into planning this event for all of our students, so the鈥痶eam was working extremely hard to pull鈥痠t鈥痑ll鈥痶ogether to聽make sure we created a鈥痜un鈥痑nd鈥痵uccessful event. The event turned out great!
Students had to聽memorize the most digits of pi by grade level. I got pie smashed in my face鈥痓y not one but two of our students; the day was seemingly perfect.鈥疻ho knew that those laughs, hugs鈥痑nd鈥痵miles would be the last we saw of our students? We聽certainly had no clue that this would be our last interactions with our students for the school year.
On Friday,鈥疢arch 13, 2020, after looking closely at the recommendation from鈥痶he CDC, our Governor,鈥疶ony Evers, announced that the state鈥疍epartment of Health Services would be聽issuing an鈥痮rder鈥痬andating statewide closure of all public and private schools聽to prevent聽the spread of聽COVID-19.鈥疘n his press statement,聽Evers shared,鈥”Closing our schools is not a decision I made lightly, but keeping our kids, our educators, our families and our communities safe is a top priority as we continue our work to respond to and prevent further spread of COVID-19聽in Wisconsin.鈥 This order and statement changed what I had known as 鈥渟ervice鈥 for the rest of the year.
Things changed dramatically for everyone. City鈥痀ear Milwaukee鈥痲uickly jumped聽straight into an amazing virtual learning plan. It has now been about five鈥痺eeks since鈥痺e started virtual learning, and this transition has been a big adjustment鈥痓ecause鈥痵ervice looks much different now. To adjust to the new physical distancing orders, my鈥痶eam鈥痥eeps some semblance of our 鈥渘ormal” routine by starting鈥痮ur days with a聽virtual team huddle to make sure鈥痺e are鈥痗aught up on the latest developments, we鈥檙e all staying in the spirit of service, and we聽are thankful we can聽spend some time together. Throughout the day, we鈥痑lso鈥痟ave a chance to join and connect with the rest of聽our 黄色视频 Milwaukee site聽by joining informational learning sessions, team builders and discussions. This has given me time to learn many new things and build relationships throughout 黄色视频 that I did not have before;鈥疘’m very grateful鈥痜or that. My team鈥痟as stayed devoted and motivated鈥痶o end鈥痶his service year with a bang; we鈥檝e鈥痗ontinued to聽support and encourage each other to keep going. Here are a few words from the Obama Team when I asked them how they were feeling about virtual鈥痩earning:
鈥淚t’s different but I am聽enjoying the fact that we are still able to learn and connect with our teams. I also appreciate all the support and love from the corps and staff!鈥
– Yasye, team聽leader
鈥淢oving virtual has truly been a learning experience that has pushed me to think differently about engaging with people and service. Although there have been some challenges with adjusting to new expectations and experiences.聽I am grateful to work for an organization with people that still show up for one another and care for one another outside of the four walls that we鈥檙e usually in. Over the last few聽weeks聽I鈥檝e really learned what #oneCityYear鈥痑nd the Beloved Community聽means聽and I know that we鈥檙e all truly in this together.鈥
– Vicki, senior impact manger
鈥淲hile I miss my students dearly, I am grateful for the extra time remote service has given us.鈥
– Lily, 黄色视频 AmeriCorps鈥痬ember
鈥淚 have learned a lot during remote service. I hope I can carry on these skills聽throughout life, although I do miss my students more than鈥痚ver!鈥
– Indi, 黄色视频 AmeriCorps鈥痬ember
This鈥痯andemic has made my team stronger than it has ever been. Not鈥痮nly鈥痟as鈥痠t strengthened鈥痬y team but also it has strengthened all of 黄色视频 Milwaukee by giving us a chance to experience new opportunities and building as a Beloved Community.
